It seems as if the birth of the internet had already laid blueprints for social media to follow and people had already foreseen the potentials of the online market even before the internet became part of human necessity during the early 1990’s.
Since the World Wide Web interconnects people all over the world, socializing is inevitable. But the Internet world was more than just creating interconnected cyber-societies, it had to eventually take on the idea of earning money, thus social media marketing was born.
The intricate process of interconnecting and linking different sites was one of the key points for online marketing. Different variables like product selling, public relations, promotions, publicity, advertising and retailing are just a few of the elements that have made social media a huge success.
Before internet access became less exclusive to the military, businesses relied on the principles of retailing and old-age telecommunications to sell and earn money. The internet has had a profound effect on the entire business industry, enabling advertising and selling faster and more convenient for customers. Establishing trade relations to countries across the world was just a click of a button away. Can anyone imagine ordering something from a country like China a decade ago? You’d have to send a letter to the shop or take a plane to go there yourself, then make an order and wait. And once you’ve received the product, guess what, it’s broken and you’d have to go through the entire painstaking process of ordering again. Aside from that, imagine sending and receiving money.
What about advertising and product promotion? The television or the radio definitely made things easier for businesses to achieve this. However, things weren’t fast enough and cost too much. The internet has simplified everything. Instead of paying thousands for a TV commercial or a radio ad, why not just make a website for free or for a little amount, add some videos and start promoting whatever you’d want to promote. You could even use social networking sites to start endorsements.
Since all these have changed, social media marketing for small business became a new business trend and a collective term for using all the advantages of the internet to make business easier. The internet has had a long way to go and an even longer way ahead. As complicated as everything may seem, the simple idea here is that people are more empowered and the chances of your business being successful has just gained a better perspective.
